Earth Leakage Fault Investigation — Nitrogen Generation Plants
Site investigation and root cause analysis of persistent earth leakage faults on nitrogen generation plant electrical systems at a Bowen Basin coal mine.
Overview
A Bowen Basin coal mine was experiencing recurring earth leakage faults on the electrical systems serving their nitrogen generation plants. The faults were persistent and difficult to diagnose remotely — previous attempts to identify the cause had not resolved the issue. The mine engaged Grid Dynamics to investigate, identify the root cause, and provide a clear path to resolution.
Earth leakage protection in underground and surface mining environments is safety-critical. Repeated nuisance tripping disrupts production, but — more importantly — unresolved earth leakage conditions represent a genuine safety risk if not properly understood and corrected.
Scope of Work
- Review of existing electrical documentation for the nitrogen generation plant systems
- Site visit to the Bowen Basin to inspect the electrical installations first-hand
- On-site testing and fault-finding to identify the source and nature of the earth leakage conditions
- Assessment of the electrical systems against relevant standards and regulatory requirements
- Preparation of a comprehensive investigation report documenting findings and root causes
- Development of a prioritised action list with specific recommendations for remediation
Outcome
The site visit proved critical — the faults were identified on-site through direct inspection and testing, providing the clarity that remote investigation had not been able to achieve. The root causes were clearly documented in the investigation report, along with a practical, prioritised action list that gave the mine’s maintenance team a clear sequence of steps to resolve the issues.
The client received a thorough technical report suitable for use by their engineering and maintenance teams, and for regulatory purposes if required.
