AC/DC Power System Design — Transportable Workover System
Full AC and DC power system design, power system studies, and control system design for a generator-fed transportable closed circuit workover system in Southern Queensland.
Overview
An oil and gas operator in Southern Queensland required a complete electrical engineering solution for a transportable closed circuit workover system. The system was generator-fed and needed to be self-contained and deployable to remote well sites — placing specific demands on the power system design in terms of fault management, system stability, and control.
The client needed both AC and DC power systems designed from scratch, along with the power system studies necessary to verify the design before construction. Grid Dynamics was engaged to deliver the full electrical engineering package.
Scope of Work
- AC power system design for the generator-fed transportable system, including single line diagram development, equipment selection, and cable sizing
- DC power system design for control and instrumentation power supply requirements
- Short circuit fault analysis to verify equipment fault ratings and determine protection requirements
- Load flow study to confirm voltage regulation and generator sizing under operating and worst-case load conditions
- Control system design covering the power management and distribution control requirements for the transportable system
- Preparation of engineering documentation suitable for procurement and construction
Outcome
Grid Dynamics delivered a complete electrical engineering package for the workover system — AC power design, DC power design, power system studies, and control system documentation — providing the client with everything required to proceed to procurement and construction.
The power system studies verified the design assumptions and confirmed that the selected equipment was appropriately rated for the fault and load conditions the system would experience in service.
